General Zoom Etiquette & Expectations
- Arrive on time for class. Sometimes the class meeting will only be the first ten minutes. If you are late, you will miss the mini-lesson.
- Situate yourself in a place as free as possible from distractions. This may not be fully possible, but let others in your household know when and where you will be attending class.
- Have your video on and microphone muted upon arrival. During "work time," you will be able to stop your video.
- Use the chat appropriately to answer and ask questions. The chat will allow more voices in the "room" and will let you post a question that can be attended to at the right time.
- Use the "reactions" or "participant" options to help signal understanding. This allows you to give a thumbs-up or down during the discussion.
- Use the "hand raise" option to let me or your classmates know you will want to talk. When you are called on, you can "unmute."
- If you need to leave the "classroom," stop your video and restart it when you return. You do not need to ask permission to use the bathroom or get a drink/food, but wait for a good stopping point to do so.
- When breakout rooms are enabled, please join. When breakout rooms are closed, please return to the full class. We will move into small groups almost daily. Sometimes these will be assigned groups, sometimes random.
- Know that you are being recorded. All Zoom meetings will be recorded for those that are absent.
Discussion Norms
- Respect everyone in the room.
- Encourage and support your peers.
- Assume best intentions when people are speaking.
- Participate verbally and nonverbally.
- When you disagree, be patient and provide a supported counter-argument. Ask follow-up questions politely to challenge thinking.
- Take turns. Do not take over the conversation and leave little time for others to speak.
- Pause briefly before jumping into a conversation; try not to interrupt or talk over someone else.
